It is already March. This year is really flying past. It is already time to plant the first seeds. Well, a little overdue. The ideal time to plant the seeds here is sometime between the last two weeks of February and the first days of March. So I am still somewhat within that window.
I have some of my seeds on hand here, but most of them are in my storage unit among my gardening items. So I have decided to plant the seeds I have here first, as well as plant the first round of potatoes. After that I will be able to determine what else I need to sow among the seeds kept elsewhere, how much of each and when I need to get started.
We’re in the middle ground between winter and spring right now, so anything could happen weatherwise. With the environment being the way it is, the temperatures can shift even more.
First on my list is to start my microgreens again. That will provide me with fresh veggies for my meals every week.
Next, I’ll pre-sow root vegetables, chili, paprika, gourds, tomatoes and onions. I will also start growing sweet potato slips.
I have a lot of onions and garlic in the soil from last fall, and they are beginning to emerge now. I hope to get to harvest somewhere between 2 and 10 kg of onions, leeks and garlic in late spring. The weather will decide whether that is realistic or not.
I have kept seed potatoes from last year’s harvest, and somewhere around mid March, I will plant them to get an early harvest.
I need to enter the greenhouse someday soon, while it is still light out. If possible, I’d like to water the propagated plants and get a good look at everything that’s in there. I have some mushroom buckets and I haven’t seen them since late last fall. I have no idea what has or hasn’t happened to them during the winter. They’ve been somewhat protected due to being in the greenhouse, but it has still been cold. We’ll see.
I’d love to be able to harvest mushrooms for Ostara, or April at least.
I grew about 50 kg worth of food last year, and I intend to beat that record this year. It would be nice to reach 75 kg, and I think that as long as I have a good season, that’s a good goal.
Have you started your seeds yet?
