Don’t listen to the people telling you that you can’t or that it is too complicated or expensive. It isn’t.
I am not here to recommend the latest and greatest to you, or make you believe you need such things to start growing your own food, because you don’t. All you need to get started are three things, and all three can be acquired for free.
A container of some sort. I often reuse plastic containers from groceries for this purpose, but you could also use cardboard boxes, old pots, storage boxes with holes in them, grow bags, old jugs, soda bottles, soy sauce bottles – the list goes on.
Your growing medium of choice. Coconut coir, soil, water, compost, potting soil, straw, coffee grounds, hemp – there are so many options out there. It all depends on what you can access, what you want to grow and if you intend to grow it indoor or outside.
Your seeds of choice. Most of us have had a tomato or a bellpepper and know very well that there are a lot of seeds within them. From one tomato slice you can get 20-30 tomato plants. From one bellpepper you can get enough viable seeds to last you the next three years. From one sprouted potato, you can get several kilograms of potatoes, especially if you chit it and plant some of the sprouts separately.
With these three things you will be well on your way to growing your own food.
Now, there are other things that will make it easier if you are living in a colder climate, or a one with less sunlight. A heated mat for seedlings, and a grow light are both excellent investments that still won’t cost you much. Once you have come a bit further on your journey and you know that you want to keep growing your food, that’s when it is time to think of what you may wish to invest in. But for now, and to to get started, you require beyond these three things.
Please feel free to introduce yourselves and ask any questions you might have in the chat.
Good luck!
