The Art of Slow Fashion: Embracing Handcrafted Clothing

Wouldn’t you like to wear a unique piece of art that could last generations?

Handcrafted clothing is wearable art. Each stitch is made with care and purpose and each part of the design is unique. Even if you buy ten pieces from the same designer, they will all be unique, like snowflakes. No two are ever the same.

Making any garment by hand takes time, no matter the technique used. That being said, I wouldn’t call a printed t-shirt a handcrafted design, though it may have been printed manually. I consider handcrafted designs to be made through methods such as sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, patchwork and so on. Some garments take years to create, and they are most precious.

Mass-produced fashion won’t have the same quality, energy or creative essence as handmade garments do. They are created for the sole purpose of making money, so they are treated as though they are disposable and they aren’t made to last.

Handcrafted fashion has been created by an artist or designer and contains a fragment of their soul. That is always the case. When an artist creates something, a writer writes something or a designer designs something, they leave a fragment of their own soul behind in the creation. Thus, the creations are all the more precious and must be revered and treated with greater respect. These garments are wearable artworks made to be treated carefully but made to last. If you care for it, a well-made design can last generations.

Where Can You Buy Handcrafted Fashion?

Today there are so many ways for artists and designers to sell their work that is quite easy to find someone who makes the kind of designs you are after. Etsy is a popular option, though it does leave the sellers with quite a bit of fees. However, as a buyer, there are many payment options and some security since it is possible to file a complaint or ask for help if something hasn’t gone quite right.

Websites and online shops are easy to make today. All you need is a few minutes to buy a domain and choose a service, and voila, you can be found online. Thus, you can also use search engines to find artists and designers that create that which you are looking for.

Other ways of acquiring handmade designs are to attend craft fairs and buy directly from the sellers/creators themselves.

Today, with social media on the rise, it is becoming more and more common for creatives to market their work and sell it live to their followers. This not only applies to fashion and art but to books as well. TikTok artists are famous for doing this.

How Do You Care For Handcrafted Fashion?

Handmade clothes must be handled with great care and that applies to the washing as well. As a rule, I like to handwash handmade clothes. If it was made by hand, it must be washed by hand. To preserve the essence of the garment and to protect the more delicate features.

Of course shoes and accessories can also be handmade, and must be treated with the same amount of care. When you truly care for something and treat it gently, you prolong its life and in turn, help the environment as well as your wallet.
