Not Every Day Is A Good One And That’s Okay

Not every day is a good one. I think we all know that. But for most of us, there is something in us that makes us feel a sort of shame when we admit that. We tell ourselves we should just be positive. That it is all about perspective. That there are no bad days, only bad attitudes or gifts that we haven’t awakened to yet.

But the thing is that even positivity can get toxic. When the sun sets, you don’t stand outside screaming at it to work harder, to change its mindset. When the leaves fall in autumn, you don’t shame the trees for shedding them.

The truth of the matter is that we need bad days. We all need balance and bad days gives us that. It isn’t feasible that across a lifetime all the days were good. That the sun was always shining outside and in our hearts. We aren’t living in a fairytale. One look at the news will tell you that.

There is both light and darkness inside all of us. We have needs and wants and desires in life. And when either of them aren’t met, we may very well experience a bad day. But as long as a bad day doesn’t turn into a bad year, we don’t need to tiptoe around those days. I think it is okay to admit to ourselves that maybe today we’re further from the lighter sides of life than we want to be. Today we are struggling and we aren’t feeling too well. But tomorrow? Tomorrow could be different.

When we allow ourselves to be as we are, to have good days and bad, and accept the fact that our happiness as well as our physical and mental abilities will ebb and flow in life… I think that is when we finally find peace.

Some days are sad days. Maybe you know why you are sad, and maybe you don’t. Either way, it’s okay to feel things. Experiencing emotions means we are still alive, and that’s worth celebrating, don’t you think?

Other days you may feel like you’re on top of the world and miracles could happen. Enjoy those days. Make the most of them. Treasure the feelings and let them imprint on your very mind and soul. And then when the bad days come, you can show yourself those memories and remind yourself that nothing lasts and soon the sun will shine on you again. The good, the bad, the heartaches, the indescribable joy – whatever it is, every moment in life is fleeting. That is what makes it so very precious. And that is why we must lean into it.

If we are feeling sad, we lean into it. We journal, we cry, we care for ourselves and we don’t try to bully ourselves into being happy.

When we are feeling happy, we lean into that too. That way the good day can turn into a great one.

We must realise that even the bad days aren’t bad. They’re part of life. Only when we react to them badly, and shame and guilt ourselves for having them, do they become bad for us.

Bad days are tricky, but we need them.

How do you deal with your bad days?
