Compost is an essential component of a nutritious soil. You needn’t spend your hard-earned money on compost though, because it is so easy to make your own.

Composting is an excellent way to assist your food-growing journey and to reduce your food waste. You can compost so much more than just food waste though. It is also an excellent way to deal with garden waste, for one.

There’s more than one type of compost. Some may require a permit, some that do better outside and some can be kept inside as well. But let’s focus on the basics for now. Like how to start one of your very own.

Starting a compost

Starting a compost is a great way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden or plants. To get started, you will need a compost bin, which can be purchased or made at home using a container or bin with a lid. The size of the bin will depend on how much organic waste you generate, but a 3-foot by 3-foot bin is a good starting point.

To begin composting, you will need a mix of “green” and “brown” materials. “Green” materials include things like fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds, while “brown” materials include things like dried leaves, straw, and newspaper. You will also need to add water to keep the compost moist.

Layer the materials in the bin, starting with a layer of brown materials, followed by a layer of green materials, and then adding a layer of soil or finished compost. Continue to layer the materials, keeping the compost moist but not wet, and turning it occasionally to help speed up the decomposition process.

Over time, the compost will break down into a rich, dark soil that can be used to fertilize plants and gardens. It’s a great way to reduce waste and create a sustainable source of nutrients for your plants!

Good luck!
