The quick answer is that I don’t, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. The majority of my work and education is handled digitally, and I work wherever I am. I mostly work at home, so my home life and work life are forever intertwined. I can’t really have one without the other. It’s inevitable that they overlap some. But I manage it by staying organised and keeping the procrastination to a minimum.
I usually make weekly to do lists. When I am able to see an overview of all the things I need to do across all areas of my life, it is easier for me to arrange daily to do’s. I tend to divide the tasks into categories and one of those categories is “work”.
When it comes to making plans privately, I simply need to rearrange my tasks for the day/week and make it work.
When I was a freelancer, my life used to be ruled by deadlines set by other people. But now… I don’t really have any deadlines apart from the ones I give myself. I mean sure, there are some things that need to be handled by a certain date, such as declaring taxes, paying bills and all that. But in my daily life, I am the one who gets to decide what I do, how I do it and when I do it.
So, while my work life and home life overlap, I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. It gives me greater freedom and opportunity. To be able to arrange my time freely and make room for what matters most is important to me. If something comes up, I know I can handle it by rearranging my schedule. As long as I complete the tasks I need to complete, everything works out. So within that, there’s a lot of wiggle room.
To be able to take care of myself and live an emotionally, mentally and physically healthy life, my health has to be a priority. Without it, I have nothing. If I don’t take good care of myself, I won’t be able to work at all. That is true for everyone, but it is especially true when you’re dealing with chronic health issues. Knowing when to work hard and when to take breaks is essential. Sometimes you need to take a health day and sometimes you need to work a bit longer. Home life and work life are intertwined and what maintains the balance and enables me to handle both or either is prioritising my health.
Health is not just wealth. Health is everything.
