People are beginning to embrace androgyny, and with it, the freedom to express oneself outside the bounds of gender. Through self-expression, we find peace.
Androgyny is about balance and freedom: equality between genders and power to the people. To put it simply, androgyny is the same as yin and yang: a balance of the feminine and the masculine. Both masculine and feminine exist within all people, gender irrelevant, and it is necessary to have that balance to live life to the fullest.
If one tries to only embrace their masculinity or their femininity and reject the rest of themselves, their happiness will be ruined. They will be living half a life, so to speak.
Androgyny in the world of fashion
Androgyny in fashion has existed for almost as long as fashion has. At the core of the history of fashion, it is clear that the main purpose of it was and is still, to enable the wearer to show the rest of the world who they are. Whether they want to show off their wealth, power, sexuality or personality, fashion is there to help them do that. Androgyny in fashion began for very much the same reason.
People wished to portray their abilities and their firm beliefs that they could do anything the opposite gender could. They wanted equality, they wanted to equal opportunities and they did not wish to wear something that labelled them so viciously and completely determined their worth as human beings. They wanted freedom to be themselves and to wear what they fancied wearing, regardless of what people would think or say about them.
Androgyny has become a big part of the 21st-century
In the last five years or so, androgyny has been “in fashion”, more so than ever before. Equality between genders continues to increase – albeit not quickly enough. The number of gender identities known acknowledged and known continues to increase. In many parts of the world, LGBTQIA has marriage equality: the right to marry who we love, regardless of their gender. With all of these positive changes, we enter a world where we are beginning to become free to be exactly who we are. To be who we are without restrictions.
Society remains an issue
Society still tries to restrain us, and control us, of course, but more people have decided to stop taking it sitting down. With their style, they take a stand and rebel against the norms, and the status quo. They choose happiness, freedom and equality over following the impossible gender roles. They are true to themselves, who they are and what they like.
Conclusion:
Fashion androgyny is about saying “Screw you” to gender roles and to the modern society that is trying to control us through them. It is about wearing whatever we fancy wearing, be it labelled as masculine or feminine. It is about realising labels are irrelevant. We are finally beginning to live life while being true to our own souls. By embracing all that we are, we can finally find peace.
Be true to your soul!
