Let’s do what we can so we don’t have to skimp on what matters most.
Number one is quite obvious, but it is important enough to mention.
Create a budget and stick to it. Make sure it isn’t too aspirational, or you will break it. Better to add a bit of extra in certain categories that are more prone to unforeseen expenses.
Prepare your meals at home instead of eating out. Now I’ve never done this, but many do eat out for lunch when they’re at work, and sometimes even dinner when working late. But you will save so much time, energy and money by preparing your meals beforehand, and your meals will also be more nutritionally balanced if you do.
Unsubscribe to newsletters and any marketing sent to your door or to your email inbox. Contrary to what some strong-willed people claim, marketing like that does make people spend money they don’t have on things they don’t need.
Go over your subscriptions and cancel streaming services and the like. There are plenty of free versions, and if you have a DVD player, DVDs do still work. Streaming services and subscriptions fall under “wants” not “needs”.
Use a bike or walk to where you need to go. If you do this whenever possible, and use public transport when something is too far away, you will not only save money, but you will also help save the environment.
Don’t be brand loyal. Many brands – be it for clothes, technology or food – are highly overpriced and overrated. You can get just as much or more for less if you let go of vanities and the need to have what others deem to be “the best”.
Never go to the mall or buy groceries when hungry. We do shop for more unnecessary things when we are hungry, and we often end up spending much more money than we have to spare.
Use coupons and track sales. There is no shame in using coupons and sales to be able to afford what you need. That’s what they’re there for. To bring costs down to make things more accessible to people. And before you start praising the stores, this also means they end up selling more and earning more.
Keep a grocery list in your kitchen. Jot down things as you run out of them. Only buy what is on the list.
Switch alcoholic beverages for non-alcoholic alternatives. Your budget and your organs will thank you.
Turn off lights whenever you leave a room.
Unplug electronics when they are not in use.
Be sure of your needs and buy in bulk whenever possible.
